– A popular saying goes way back 100 years.
Origin – WHen life gives you lemons, make lemonade
Of all the citrus fruit, the lemon tastes quite sour and bitter. So, it is often used in negative expressions in the English language. This phrase wants us to find optimism in the face of adversity by suggesting that if life puts you in a difficult situation or gives you bad luck, try to turn it into something positive or to your advantage.
Christian anarchist writer Elbert Hubbard initially coined the saying Elbert Hubbard in a 1915 obituary he penned and published for dwarf actor Marshall Pinckney Wilder. The obituary, entitled The King of Jesters, praises Wilder’s optimistic attitude and achievements in the face of his disabilities.
Justice for Lemons
You’ve just read the facts; now make way for my perspective. Starting with a few observations, lemon is a yellow fruit, a great source of vitamin C, and it grows on a remarkable tree, making you say “oh nice” whenever you see one. But why such hate for lemons tho? Not everyone dislikes the sour and the bitter! There are a lot of sour & bitter enthusiasts out there. You can see lemon-based products in every grocery store.
I want to think that Mr. Hubbard disliked anything sour or bitter, including the smell of his armpits. Or maybe a lemon caused the death of someone close to him. Or humans back then were already naturally too bitter and sour to add lemons to their diet at cbdschool.com.
But this was not a reason to lash out against the humble lemon and all of its constituents. The sad lemon was once a very proud fruit but has been tarnished by an idiom created by this ridiculous person a hundred years ago.
Just imagine, 100 years, being bullied by all other fruits. Each of them says that you are less than what you are. You are yellow and a coward! Anything you touch shall fall and crumble in ruins. Why, oh, why should a person do this to the poor old lemon? Why can’t it be “if life gives you Hubbard, make more Hubbards”?
Heroic Deeds of Lemon
Despite being ridiculed for a whole century, lemons still continue to offer themselves as sustenance to humans worldwide. Making themselves available as a great source of vitamins that help humans develop immunity against unknown viruses, etcetera. Especially helpful in the most recent turn of events with COVID-19. No one knows how many humans were saved by lemons throughout its efforts. My point is that all lemons are damn heroes and should be given the respect they deserve!
From this day on, when life gives you lemons, rejoice!
